Tips for Air Travel with Children

Tips that can help make your flight more comfortable and stress-free:

Book an early morning departure: If you’re traveling with toddlers or young children, you should book an early morning departure.  Best chance of avoiding delays and everyone is tired and just wants to nap.

Save your upgrades for toddler-free travel: Traveling in first class with kids can be more stressful than it’s worth. It’s better to save your upgrades for when you’re traveling without kids.

Talk to your kids about what to expect: Kids do so much better when they know what to expect.  YouTube also has videos which go over the entire flight experience, from baggage check-in and ticketing to onboard etiquette and safety.

Dress in layers and skip shoes with laces:  Be ready for drastically changing temperatures when traveling with a toddler. Dress your kids in comfortable layers—preferably without buttons, zippers, or anything that could prevent them from getting to the bathroom in time. The same principle applies to shoes: Avoid laces and opt for slip-ons.

Bring surprises: When flying with a toddler, a wrapped new toy has two advantages: Kids love to unwrap stuff, and a new toy has more attention-grabbing pull.

Pack a small bag of toys and snacks: Carrying a child and luggage through a busy airport can be challenging. Pack a small backpack or drawstring bag of toys and snacks to keep your child occupied during the flight.

Book a separate ticket for your child: Even though they can fly free on your lap from birth to age two, it’s better to book a separate seat for your child for your comfort and the safety of the child.
